Hunger Games Actress Named (And More Agent Tweets!)

It's official. The role of Katniss Everdeen, protagonist of the amazing Hunger Games books by Suzanne Collins, will be played by Jennifer Lawrence.

Jennifer's most recent role was in "Winter's Bone," a Sundance Film Festival hit that earned her an Oscar nomination.

Some people are disappointed with the choice, saying a) she's blonde and blue-eyed (Katniss has dark hair, an olive complexion, and grey eyes in the novels), b) too conventionally pretty, or c) she's too old (20, whereas Katniss starts the Hunger Games trilogy at 16).

My opinion? I haven't even seen this girl act, so I'm not about to judge. I do think the fact that she's nabbed herself a Best Actress Oscar nomination at such an early age works in her favor. Plus, I think that Hollywood has some experience using hair dye and colored contacts, altering appearances, and aging people up and down, so I'm not too worried about all that.
.
Again, I don't know very much about her, so I'm not in a good position to form a solid opinion. I know people were rooting for a few other actresses, so I can understand the disappointment if your pick didn't make the cut.

.What do you guys think?

So many writers offering me "exclusive subs" when I haven't requested them. Is this some new--and bad--advice circulating around Internet?

here is one for you all...why is it so hard for me to find a great romantic comedy for YA?

PS- Tiny town weather update: it was 72 degrees yesterday--the kiddo and I were out in shorts and t-shirts, frolicking gaily at the park...woke up this morning to snow. That's Colorado for you.

  1. I just hope they really do dye her hair, use colored contact lenses, etc.

    Thanks for the updates!

  2. I agree to each of your responses to A, B, and C. Dying an actors hair is not hard to do. Finding an actor who can play the part well? That's a challenge.
Don't people realize that if the casting director picked people solely on looks, they'd have even more to complain about???

  3. i've never seen the gal act either. i'm just trying to come to terms with the fact that my kaya didn't get the part! :(
i hope they don't just pick some trendy or upandcoming heartthrob type guy for peeta.

  4. Jennifer seems like a good choice. Thanks for the agent tweets!

  5. I think however they picked for Katniss, they couldn't please everyone. Tough role to fill.

Thanks for collecting these gems from twitter. i always seem to miss the party over there. That "douche" quote is hilarious!

  6. Great post! Personally, I think that Hailee Steinfeld could have rocked this part as Katniss, but we shall see!

  7. I think Katniss is such a strong character, that it's going to be the talent of the actress, not the look, that matters.

    I hope it's good.

  8. Love these tweet updates!
I hope that actress does justice to the character. Hair can be died, contact lenses placed, and youth reconstructed with good acting, I hope!

  9. Er, that's "dyed" not "died", LOL.

  10. I think this movie is going to be a bomb. It's PG-13 (should be rated R), older actors (and actress), and the actress is a Caucasian blue-eyed blond as opposed to what she's really described. Let's face it, the Director is making choices based off of his own preferences and could give a sh*t about the actual book material.

  11. Wow, excellent tips/quotes; I missed those on Twitter. And yeaaah, not sure any actress playing Katniss will mesh with the character I see in MY head, but whatev. Guess we'll just have to see! I don't know anything about the chosen actress either.

  12. I'm reserving judgement for now--there's no question they can alter her appearance, and in interviews the director's even said that they're going to be very careful about making sure they do so. I'm more interested in whether she can act, to be honest (and, you know, minor things like whether the screenplay and the supporting cast are any good).

  13. I think she was a good choice. I know she "looks" different from how I imagined Katniss, but I think it's attitude that's going to sell the role. I've heard she was great in Winter's Bone, so I'm hopeful about her in the movie.

    Also, great tweet collection!

  14. ...she did well in "Winter's Bone," but they'll really need to dress her down a bit, not allow her to bathe, toss the eyeliner in the trash, that sort of thing, or it'll never work.

I read somewhere that Collins was present on selection day, and gave the director her blessing. I guess one can't argue with the choice when the story's creator is involved. We'll see...

  15. Thanks for posting those agent tweets! And wouldn't you know it, one agent actually wanting stuff about 'mob cuture' when I have one in the crappy first draft pile. I'm sure she'll have moved on to something else before mine is near readable. :)

  16. I love it when you repost tweets. This is all great information -- especially about the YA romantic comedy. I'd love to do humor for that market but I've never seen much selection (or interest). And I don't have an opinion either way about the actress, other than hearing over and over again what a wonderful job she did in that movie.

  17. Just watching the girl in the trailer for Winter's Bone, she totally sold me. She'll be a great Katniss. Now remains to be seen if I have the guts to go watch that book in "real life"

OOOOOOHHH, YA Romantic Comedy? I can do Loveable Characters... not sure if I can do comedy... oh yeah I have to finish my current WIP (still, great tip!)

  18. Hi Jess,
Oh thanks! I'm really looking forward to it, thankfully it only opens in May, so I still have time!
Ok, I will! I'll have pictures of them up soon!

  19. Jess - as always fantastic info for those querying. I love some of those quotes anyway!! And I can't wait for the Hunger Games movie! I trust them to do it right. Like you said, they can change appearance, and she must be pretty good if she got a best actress nom.

  20. Honestly, I think she could be a really good Katniss. She was excellent in Winter's Bone, so I wouldn't write her out just yet. Still, I was kind of disappointed with The Hunger Games so I can't say I'm particularly attached to whoever ends up with the role of Katniss.

  21. I used to live in Boulder...and yeah, the weather can change in seconds. BUT, it did the same here in NJ today. Friday was in the 70's, yesterday sunny and 60s....today sleet and flurries then 40's and rain. This is the time of year for whacky weather, fo sho. :)

As for Jennifer, let me tell you, she was freaking stunning in Winter's Bone. Seriously, she blew me away so hard in the theater, that I watched ti again when it came out on DVD. She's tremendously talented and a coup...the director was lucky to get someone of her caliber.
Please, they can make her look like anyone they want with makeup and hair and various prosthetics. Seriously, landing her is going to help the movie get taken seriously and not just some teen movie. I think she will make the naysayers eat their words.
I do wonder who they'll cast for the guys.

Great tweet round up, Jess. :) Thanks.

    Hugs,
    Lola

  23. I don't know much about many actors, especially new ones, so I don't care who they pick just so they make a good movie.

  24. The tweets are just hilarious! *goes to cross out "prolific" in query letter...* :)

You know, I've given up picking hollywood actors for my favorite characters in books. It never really goes my way... I don't know much about her either, I just hope they do the book justice.
