It's Friday the 13th!! Looking at Superstition in Books...

Today is Friday the 13th~ feel free to blame any work-related errors, computer malfunctions, query letters sent with typos, burned cooking, or shrunken laundry on bad luck :)

I was going to do a post about books with superstitious themes, but Rachel Seigel over at Pub Crawl beat me to it:

Superstitious Reads for Friday the 13th

*To her list, I might add The Adventures of Huck Finn~ lots of good superstitions in that novel!

Want to know more about the day's "bad luck" origin (including some interesting info on the connection between Friday the 13th and the Knights Templar, as popularized in Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code)? Click below.

Do you have any recommendations of books featuring superstitions?

  1. You know, that would make an interesting story about a society based upon all those superstitions--and have them be true.

  3. Have you ever read The Thirteenth Floor by Sid Fleischman? Fun story about things that happen on a floor that.doesn't exist... Except in another dimension.

  4. I like that...blame the bad and odd or failed on Friday the 13th. Well, we don't get to do it often so might as well.

  5. I LOVE Friday the 13th!!! It is a Lucky number/day for me - I was a sick baby and brought home from the hospital on a Friday the 13th (October specifically) and I also was born at 6.13am :-)

I've also heard SEND ME A SIGN (a new YA book coming out sometime in 2012) is about a girl with cancer who believes in luck and superstitions.

  8. The history on Friday the 13th is interesting. I think I heard there are a lot of Friday the 13ths this year - 13 weeks apart, not sure if it's true though. :)

  9. Friday the 13th are always lucky days for me. Mainly cuz I'm a non-conformist and I insist on being the opposite of mainstream. ;)
But full moon's really do have an effect on peeps. I can always tell when there's gonna be one. Asians are big on superstition. It drives a lot of their lore and many still live by it today.
Love your new profile pic! :)

  11. Superstitions are so quirky - I love superstitious characters! I tried writing one myself once. One of my fav. quirky ones is the "rabbit rabbit rabbit" thing some people do for luck on the first day of a month!
